Paul Caffrey

Assistant Coach

Paul Caffrey joined the Colorado Rapids as an Assistant Coach in January 2012, coming to the club after serving with Wilmer Cabrera at the United States Under-17 National Team for the previous four years.

Caffrey, who also worked with Rapids Head Coach Oscar Pareja at the U.S. U-17 National Team in 2007-08, helped the team twice qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup (2009 and 2011), advancing to the Round of 16 both times.

Prior to joining U.S. Soccer, Caffrey spent 2002 to 2007 as the head coach of the men’s program at the Suffolk County Community College of the National Junior College Athletic Association. He helped the team to two consecutive national final four appearances (2003, 2004) and earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2004 and the Region XV Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2006. He also served as the Assistant Director of Athletics and as an Assistant Professor of Education.

Caffrey was a four year starter and three year captain at Adelphi University where he earned his BA, MBA and MA. As a player at Adelphi, Caffrey was named the Adelphi University Male Athlete of the Year in 1991 and selected as an All-American in 1990. In 2008 he was inducted into the school’s Hall of Fame, having also spent three years (1997-2000) as an assistant coach.

Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Caffrey played for the University College of Dublin F.C. in the League of Ireland and made an European Cup Winners Cup appearance in 1985, and also represented the Republic of Ireland on the U-17 squad from 1985-87. Caffrey made an appearance in the UEFA Cup while playing for Bohemians F.C., also of the League of Ireland, from 1986-87.

Caffrey’s family includes his wife Kelly, son Kian (9) and daughter Keira (6).
