Tim Hinchey was named President of the Colorado Rapids on December 12, 2011, bringing more than 20 years of experience in professional sports in the United States and England to the role.
Having originally joined the Rapids in November 2010 as the club’s Chief Marketing Officer, Hinchey has overseen growth and development of the franchise, including increased attendance and sponsorship revenue, a more than 100 per cent increase in Season Ticket Member accounts, the first-ever jersey deal, as well as the arrival of the Rapids' first Designated Player.
He also serves as a member of the Board of CRYSC.
Under Hinchey’s leadership, the Rapids had the most successful year in club history in 2016, setting record marks in sponsorship revenue, earned media, and attendance, including a record 10 capacity crowds. Dick’s Sporting Goods Park enjoyed its highest average attendance in stadium history, and the second-highest total attendance in franchise history.
On the field, all kinds of records were broken as the team finished second in the Supporters’ Shield. They went the entire regular season unbeaten at home, becoming only the fifth team in MLS history to do so. It was this all-round success which earned Hinchey the prestigious Doug Hamilton Executive of the Year Award from MLS, as well as the Executive of the Year accolade from Mile High Sports Magazine.
Hinchey has also expanded the talent in the Rapids front office to include David Burke, Senior Vice President and Chief Ticketing Officer, Wayne Brant, VP - Business Operations, Pádraig Smith, Sporting Director, and Richard Fleming, Senior Director of Broadcasting and Play-By-Play Announcer.
With Hinchey’s direction, the club opened the Audi Chairman’s Club, modeled on the European-style directors’ box/boardroom, and the Summit Club, the Rapids’ first true VIP hospitality club for premium customers.
On the field, Hinchey has worked with Soccer Operations to oversee a dynamic shift in first team philosophy, working to recruit and develop young talent. Such players include Homegrown talent Shane O’Neill, Dillon Serna, Kortne Ford and Richie Perez, MLS SuperDraft acquisitions Axel Sjöberg, Dillon Powers, Deshorn Brown, Marlon Hairston, Jared Watts, John Berner and Dominique Badji, and recruits from the minor leagues, such as Clint Irwin.
The 2016 team set club highs, including 13 shutouts (the most in MLS in 2016), a record-equaling 11 home wins, 15 wins for the season (the most since 1999, before ties were introduced), the most points in a single season (58) and the most points-per-game (1.7). Colorado also signed two further Designated Players, with the introduction of Albanian international Shkëlzen Gashi and USA legend Tim Howard.
Ahead of the 2014 season, Hinchey spearheaded the hiring process that saw club legend Pablo Mastroeni rejoin the Rapids as the team’s seventh Head Coach.
Prior to arriving in Colorado, Hinchey served as the Vice President of Commercial for English Football League Championship side Derby County for three years. While there he oversaw a radical change in the club’s commercial approach, introducing a number of innovative ideas and policies unique to English football that have brought great success and results off the field.
The Rams broke new ground by becoming the first club to secure a ‘Season Presenting Partner’ when telecoms firm Buymobilephones.net signed up for the 2008-09 season, a relationship which grew to become Derby County’s shirt sponsor through 2013. Under his leadership, the Rams more than doubled their sponsorship revenue and saw record sales figures for corporate hospitality.
Before joining DCFC, Hinchey was with the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats as their Executive Vice President of Business Operations. During his time there, the Bobcats smashed their all-time season ticket record and introduced 22 new corporate partners, more than doubling corporate sales revenue in one year. He previously served as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development and Chief Marketing Officer for the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets where he was responsible for the team’s corporate partnerships, partner services, luxury suite sales and service and the start-up of the team’s relocation to Oklahoma City and its subsequent success in ticket sales and corporate development.
His start in professional sports came began with the Los Angeles Kings in 1991 and continued as Director of Strategic Alliances for Maloof Sports & Entertainment, where he developed strategic and innovative plans for all corporate partnerships integral to the NBA Sacramento Kings, WNBA Sacramento Monarchs, WISL Sacramento Knights, ARCO Arena and Senior PGA Tour Gold Rush Classic.
As an introduction to the world’s game, Hinchey first worked in soccer in the summer of 1994, when he held the position of Assistant Press Officer for the FIFA World Cup during all competitions, including the Final at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles.
Hinchey serves on the Community Leadership Board of the American Diabetes Association of Colorado as well as the Industry Advisor Committee Board for Insight Centre for Data Analytics based in Galway, Ireland. A native of northern California, Hinchey and his wife Mia are the proud parents of six children.
