Rapids Unified team tied FC Dallas' Special Olympics team 2-2; head to Portland for next match

On Saturday night, the Special Olympics Rapids team hosted Special Olympics Dallas in an exciting soccer match immediately following the Rapids victory over FC Dallas in MLS action. The match ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw, with great sportsmanship, competitiveness and teamwork exhibited by both teams.

The Denver Post reporter John Meyer covered the team as it prepared for the match and provides a fantastic account of the game and partnership, with reaction from the athletes themselves and insight into how the program developed and has grown.

The match against the Dallas team was the first in the second year of a partnership between the Colorado Rapids and Special Olympics Colorado. On Sept. 20-22, the SOCO Rapids Unified Team will travel to Portland, Ore., for a similar exchange program with Special Olympics Oregon and the Portland Timbers.

On Friday the SOCO team will participate in an exclusive training program at the adidas corporate headquarters’ facilities, stay at the same hotel with the Colorado Rapids, and attend the Rapids-Timbers match at Jeld-Wen Field. The match against Portland Special Olympic team will take place on Saturday at halftime of the MLS Reserve League match inside Jeld-Wen Field.
