The Colorado Rapids could soon add some more depth to their already hefty midfield corps. The club confirmed on Thursday afternoon that they are in talks with former Kansas City Wizards star Claudio López.

“We’ve been in discussions with Claudio,” head coach Gary Smith told MLSsoccer.com. “There’s nothing confirmed at the moment. We‘ve had some positive conversations. Where that goes from here I’m not sure at this moment. He’s certainly someone that would offer some of the qualities that would be beneficial to the group.”

The 35-year-old Argentine World Cup veteran has informed the Rapids he has been keeping himself fit. It is unclear whether a trial would be an option to gauge the player's physical conditions.

“If we can get that situation it would be nice,” Smith said. “Whether or not Claudio would be open to that, who knows? The reality is he’s a free agent and if we can come to some sort of agreement together, then wonderful. At this moment in time we don’t have any confirmed deal or anything in place.”

Earlier this week, both Smith and technical director Paul
Bravo said the club wanted to bring in one or two attacking players who
could either play up front or out wide. The idea, they said, is to allow the front-running tandem of
Conor Casey and Omar Cummings an occasional rest, as well as provide back-up for left midfielder, Colin
Clark. Smith apparently likes López's versatility and his ability to play up top, out wide or even as an attacking midfielder in the middle.

"El Piojo" (the Louse) was released during the offseason after two relatively successful seasons
with the Wizards. He made 57 appearances for Kansas City, scoring 13 goals and posting 15 assists.

As fate would have it, Colorados travel to Kansas City on April 10.

“We’ve been in discussions with Claudio,” Smith said. “There’s nothing confirmed at the moment. We‘ve had some positive conversations. Where that goes from here I’m not sure at this moment. He’s certainly someone that would offer some of the qualities that would be beneficial to the group.”
