Game Preview: Rapids at 'Quakes
COMMERCE CITY, CO - The Colorado Rapids head out for their second game of a back-to-back road stretch as they take on the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, May 1 at Buck Shaw Stadium at 8:00 pm MT (KWGN-Channel 2).
Colorado’s 3-1-1 record places them second in the Western Conference, while their 10 points are the most ever in the club’s 15-year history through five games. San Jose are 2-2-0 (6 points) and currently sit sixth in the West.
-- The Rapids have not claimed a win against the Earthquakes since April 24, 2004, going 0-5-6 since that time.
-- The Rapids’ last road victory in this series came on August 30, 2003 at Spartan Stadium. That date was also the last time Colorado have scored more than one goal against San Jose.
-- We should remind readers that the Earthquakes were not part of MLS for the 2006 and 2007 seasons while they obtained new ownership. The team returned to MLS for the 2008 season and retained all their historical records.
-- All five goals scored on the Rapids this season have come from set pieces and none from the run of play (2 off free kicks, 2 penalty kicks and 1 off a corner kick). The Rapids have not given up a goal from the run of play in 450 minutes this season.
-- The Rapids are the highest scoring team in MLS with eight (8) goals, however they are second in goals per game average (1.60). Columbus have 5 games through 3 games (1.67).
-- Omar Cummings has scored 18 goals in MLS, spread fairly evenly against 10 teams. San Jose are one of the four teams against which he has yet to score.
-- On the other side, Conor Casey has scored the game-tying goal against San Jose in each of his three starts against the Quakes, all 1-1 finals. In his first game against SJ on July 12, 2008, Casey evened the score in the 69th minute. Then, in back-to-back games on September 18 and 23, 2009, he put away extra time penalty kicks to salvage one point each time for the Rapids.
-- Rapids ‘keeper Matt Pickens is a perfect 100 percent against SJ, though he’s only faced the Quakes one time in his career, his fewest appearances against any MLS side. He won his only start against SJ in his second career start for the Chicago Fire on April 16, 2005, a 2-1 victory.
-- San Jose count on core veterans Joe Cannon, Arturo Alvarez, Ramiro Corrales, Cornell Glenn, Andre Luiz, and Bobby Convey, and this year they added veteran Brazilian forward Eduardo, rookie center back Ike Opara, and midfielder Joey Gjertsen. The Quakes also brought back forward Scott Sealy, who has been playing overseas.
-- The two teams have a history of interchanging players, notable Paul Bravo, David Kramer, and Joe Cannon have played for both sides. The most recent trade came on April 7, 2010, when the Rapids acquired forward Quincy Amarikwa from San Jose in exchange for a 2011 draft pick.
