Rapids Defeat KC in Open Cup Qualifier
Kansas City, Missouri - The Colorado Rapids defeated the Kansas City Wizards 2-1 on Tuesday in a qualifying game for the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Stanley H. Durwood Stadium on the campus of the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Kansas City rookie Teal Bunbury gave the hosts an early lead with a goal after only four minutes, but Rapids midfielder Wells Thompson scored in the 24th and 80th minutes to advance Colorado to the next round of qualifying.
The Rapids will meet the New York Red Bulls, Philadelphia Union or New England Revolution in the next phase of U.S. Open Cup qualifying. Philadelphia plays at New York on April 27, with the winner hosting the Revolution on May 12.
Colorado's victory over Kansas City marks the fourth consecutive year that the Rapids have won the first qualifying game in seeking to qualify for the U.S. Open Cup. The club's last appearance in the 96-year old tournament was in 2007.
Newly acquired Argentine forward / midfielder Claudio Lopez made his Rapids debut when he replaced Andre Akpan in the 79th. A minute later, Lopez fed Mehdi Ballouchy who led Thompson in the box and the midfielder finished to the lower right corner for the game-winner.
