Back-to-Back! Rapids Reserves are Champions Again!

COMMERCE CITY CO (October 7 2007) – The Colorado Rapids Reserves won the MLS Reserve Division for the second straight year tonight with a 3-0 victory over the Toronto FC Reserves.

The Rapids Reserves got off to a quick start as they earned a free kick near the top of Toronto’s box. Jose Cancela who scored from a dead ball earlier in the year for the first team struck a driven shot destined for the top left corner. The superb shot was equaled by a terrific diving save from Srdjan Djekanovic.

Jacob Peterson had the next shot on goal for the Rapids. In the 10th minute John DiRaimondo played the ball down the right channel where Peterson picked it up with a deft touch and fired a rocket to the low near post; the ball was barely saved.

Toronto's Joey Melo came close to breaking the deadlock in the 24th minute when a cross deflected out to him 30 yards from Zach Thornton’s goal. Melo uncorked a rocket that sailed just wide.

Nicolas Hernandez had a great chance in the 52nd minute. After running furiously to get into open space he received a pass turned and fired. His shot beat the ‘keeper but not the post and it ricocheted out for a goal kick.

The Rapids jumped ahead in the 65th minute as Cancela taking another free kick played a ball to the back post where Keel deflected it across the mouth of the goal to Jordan Harvey who smashed the ball into the back of the net to put Colorado up 1-0.

The Rapids doubled their lead in the 80th minute. Rapids Reserve call-up player Galen Thompson was the catalyst as he played a terrific cross from the right wing to the center of the box. Cancela fought hard to put his head on the ball and he made his effort count as he found the back of the net.

In the 87th minute second-half sub Nico Colaluca stole the ball from a Toronto defender and ran uncontested 30 yeards into goal and chipped the ball past Djekanovic to seal the game and the 2007 MLS Reserve Division Championship in style.
Following the historic win Rapids Managing Director Jeff Plush presented the MLS Reserve Division Championship trophy to Coach John Murphy and the Rapids Reserves who celebrated their victory on the field inside their home stadium in style.
