A quick start for the Rapids led to the first scoring opportunity in the second minute of the game. But Kyle Beckerman’s boot from the near side went wide of the post.

The Black and Blue kept up the pressure as they drove downfield but the field position was not enough for the Rapids and in retaliation Chivas defender Ezra Hendrickson let one rip. But Eric Denton was there to blast the ball right off the goalline back to midfield and make a beautiful save.

Chivas's offense tested Rapids goalie Byron Foss for the second time in the 23rd minute when forward Francisco Mendoza kept up the pressure with a through ball to the far-side to the feet of teammate Arturo Torres who then one-touched to the head of Juan Franciso Palencia. Rapids defender Mike Petke saved the Rapids with a last second clearance to keep the score at 0-0.

Alain Nkong returned the pressure for the Black & Blue in the 33rd minute with an offensive foray down the field and a through ball to a wide open Dedi Ben-Dayan on his left. With no angle the Israeli still smoked the ball almost effortlessly into the upper 90 for the first goal of the game and a sure candidate for the Sierra Mist MLS Goal of the Week.

Chivas equalized only two minutes later with a long pass from Garcia down field to the near post. His teammate Matt Taylor one-touched a shot straight into the foot of Rapids defender Nat Borchers. A bad luck deflection off of Borchers' leg led to the Rapids’ first own-goal of the season and tie on the scoreboard at 1-1.

The second half began with the Rapids controlling most of the possession which they quickly turned into a good scoring chance in the 49th minute. Nkong made a slashing run through the midfield that culminated with a quick one-two with Peguero that left Nkong with a free shot. However his effort skipped wide past the post.

Chivas missed a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 54th minute. Ramon Ramirez played a nice scooped pass over the Rapids defense to Juan Pablo Garcia. Foss came out to block the shot and Garcia played a nice pass back to the onrushing Taylor. But amazingly Taylor missed the shot from three yards out sending the ball over the bar.

The last 20 minutes of the game saw Chivas bunker with the Rapids controlling the majority of possession but having trouble cracking the determined Chivas defense. And with Chivas not connecting on any of their counter-attacking forays neither side greatly troubled the other over the final stretches.

This is the first game ever against Chivas USA that the Colorado Rapids have not been victorious. The tie leaves Colorado with 41 points four behind the Los Angeles Galaxy and five behind FC Dallas as they still chase those two teams for a higher playoff seed.

In the second game of last night's doubleheader Mexico City's Cruz Azul emerged victorious over Chivas of Guadalajara winning on penalty kicks after the match ended regulation at 1-1.

The Black and Blue will next face off against FC Dallas this Saturday October 8th at Pizza Hut Park at 6:30 p.m. Colorado Rapids (12-13-5) vs. Chivas USA (4-21-6)
