Match Preview: Rapids Take on Red Bulls for Last Time in Giants Stadium This Saturday
June 27, 2010
COMMERCE CITY COLO. (ColoradoRapids.com) - Your Colorado Rapids look to win their third straight match over New York and add to their four game unbeaten streak when they travel to take on the Red Bulls this Saturday May 30.
Kickoff is set for 5:30pm MT at Giants Stadium.
This will be the last time ever that Colorado play the Red Bulls at the Meadowlands with Red Bull Arena scheduled to open next season.
The Rapids and Red Bulls will be meeting on Saturday for the 30th time with Colorado holding a 13-13-3 all-time record against New York in 14 years of competition. In New Jersey the Rapids are 6-7-1 with Colorado winning their last two contests on the road against the Red Bulls.
Following their 2-2 with Seattle last weekend Colorado (2-3-4 13 points) find themsleves in 4th place in the Western Conference. New York (2-6-3 9 points) is still looking to return to their form of last season as they currently sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference tied with defending MLS Cup champion Columbus.
Colorado has not lost a game since their 0-1 defeat at Houston on April 19. The Rapids have also strung together an impressive run of earning points in seven of their last eight contests.
It will definitely be a week of racking up the frequent flyers miles for the club as they began their week traveling to Seattle only to suffer a 0-1 loss to the Sounders in a U.S. Open Cup play-in match on Tuesday May 26 at Starfire Stadium. The team then returns to Colorado for only one day of training before heading back out on the road towards New York.
No strangers to travel six of the Rapids' first 10 games this season have been on the road. Colorado has also played both U.S. Open Cup play-in matches this year on the road as well.
Over the past two weeks Colorado will have logged 10214 round-trip miles in the air playing at New England (5/16) Seattle (5/26) and New York (5/30).
With his sixth goal of the season against Seattle last weekend Conor Casey placed himself among the top goal scorers in Major League Soccer. Casey is tied with four other players for the league lead but is the only one of the group to reach his total in just nine games.
The Rapids also have two players Colin Clark and Omar Cummings tied for third in the league for assists with four each.
Casey will look for continued success against New York where in their last meeting he recorded his first career hat trick scoring a 90th minute goal in Colorado’s 5-4 win leading to a season sweep. In 2008 the Rapids out-scored New York 9-4 with help from a 4-0 shutout of the Red Bulls on July 4th.
This Saturday night's game will be broadcast in Colorado on Altitude. Calling the game for Altitude will be Mike Haynes (play-by-play) and Marcelo Balboa (color).
