Mexican Round-Up: Puebla Remain Undefeated Veracruz Net 7th Consecutive Victory
MEXICO CITY (Associated Press) - Puebla remained undefeated after tying Monterrey 1-1 and tournament leader Veracruz racked up its seventh consecutive victory with a 1-0 win over Toluca on Wednesday during a game-packed day of first-division soccer.
Jair Garcia scored a penalty goal in the 49th minute of the game which was tied by Monterrey player Jesus Arellano in the 67th.
Arellano scored with an acrobatic shot from two meters (6.5 feet) outside the penalty zone that Puebla goalkeeper Oscar Daut was unable to stop.
With the tie Puebla remained No. 1 in Group 2 with 16 points while Monterrey remained in second place in Group 3 with 14. At the head of Group 3 is tournament leader Veracruz with 21 points.
Scoring the controversial winning shot in the fourth minute for The Veracruz "Red Sharks" was Uruguayan player Gustavo Biscayzacu.
Biscayzacu sent the ball into the net after it hit him on his left arm. Sharks player Cuauhtemoc Blanco sent a high pass from the side that was deflected lightly by Toluca defensive player Paulo da Silva of Paraguay. Biscayzacu ran in from behind Blanco and sent the ball soaring past Toluca goalkeeper Hernan Cristante of Argentina. Toluca remained with 11 points in Group 2.
In other matches Wednesday the Jaguars of Chiapas defeated host Los Tecos 1-0 with a single goal from Jesus Gutierrez in the 33rd minute giving Chiapas 12 points in Group 3. The Tecos have 11 points in Group 1.
Los Rayos of Necaxa tied home team Santos 1-1 with goals by Santos player Federico Dominguez of Argentina who sent the ball into the net with a chest shot in the seventh minute following a head shot by Carlos Arellano. Three minutes later Brazilian Fabiano Pereira tied the game.
Necaxa now has 10 points in Group 3 while Santos is in last place in the group with eight.
Also Wednesday Morelia scored its second victory in the tournament with a 3-2 win over America which suffered its second consecutive defeat.
Rafael Marquez Roberto Vargas and Fernando Arce scored for Morelia in the 30th 41st and 46th minutes respectively. Duilio Davino and Chilean Reinaldo Navia scored for America in the 73rd and 87th minutes.
Morelia rose to eight points in Group 1 while America remained with seven in the same group.
The Tigers and Pachuca played a 0-0 game leaving the Tigers in second place in Group 2 with 14 points and Pachuca with 12 points in Group 3.
In the last game of the night the Dorados de Sinaloa defeated the Chivas of Guadalajara 2-0 accumulating 11 points in Grupo 1 equal to the Tecos.
Costa Rican Oscar Rojas and Jared Borgetti scored the goals in the 28th and 46th minutes respectively.
Guadalajara remained with 11 points in Group 2.
