Osorno Debuts but Rapids Drop 1-0 Decision to Dallas

Frisco Texas (Saturday August 4 2007)- The Colorado Rapids' newest player Daniel Osorno made his MLS debut for the Rapids Saturday night but it wasn't enough for a win as the Rapids dropped a 1-0 loss to FC Dallas at PizzaHutPark. The second half sub sparked a momentum swing but strong possession and several scoring opportunities in the second half came to nothing for the Rapids.

The Rapids wasted little time at the beginning of this match. The first look at goal for the visitors came before Dallas even gained possession. In the first minute Jovan Kirovski found an open Jacob Peterson but the ball came off the striker's yellow boot just wide of the goal post.

"Bouna Time" started in the ninth minute for Colorado. Arturo Alvarez took a pass from Juan Toja down the right wing. Cutting inside his defender Alvarez unleashed a low powerful shot on goal that was stopped and held by a diving Bouna Condoul.

In the 18th minute Condoul almost had a chance to contribute to the offense. He sent a long pass out of the back that traveled almost the entire length of the pitch. The goalkeeper’s ball was so dangerous that it forced Dallas goalie Ray Burse out of his box to head the ball out of bounds.

Another long ball moments later forced the Rapids' defense into action. Looking to take advantage of Dominic Oduro’s terrific speed a long pass was played behind the Rapids' back line. The Ghanaian had a good look at goal but before he could get off a shot Brandon Prideaux chased him down and tackled the ball out of bounds.

A quick series of passes in the 27th minute allowed Nicolas Hernandez his first chance on goal. Hernandez and Peterson were two-on-two with the Dallas defense. Hernandez passed to Peterson who chipped the ball over a Dallas defender on his first touch. The pass hit Hernandez in stride but the Argentine striker saw his shot blocked and cleared.

Dallas jumped ahead in the 31st minute on a free kick won by MLS All-Star Juan Toja. The kick taken by US Under-20 International Dax McCarty bounced inside the box and onto the head of Drew Moor who put it into the back of the net.

Eager to respond the Rapids had their own free-kick opportunity in the 34th minute. Jose Cancela who scored off of a dead ball earlier this season chose this time to find Ugo Ihemelu on the far post. Putting the beautiful cross to good use Ihemelu put his header low and just inside the post only to see it saved brilliantly by Burse. The ‘keeper failed to corral the shot and the rebound fell to Hernandez but his shot went just wide of the far post.

In the 59th minute the Rapids' newest player former Mexican international Daniel Orsono was introduced as a substitute for Terry Cooke.

In the 61st minute Peterson had a terrific chance at goal. Playing a pass from Ososrno on the right wing Peterson saw Burse cheating off his line and decided to test him. The shot was barely tipped over the bar by the surprised goalkeeper.

After coming into the game at the same time as Osorno Herculez Gomez added instant spark. His first touch was a shot from the top of the eighteen that was on its way into the back of the net if not for a last minute block by Moor. His second touch only moments later off a pass from Osorno was another shot near the end-line that had to be punched away by Burse.

Osorno had his first look at goal in the 74th minute off of a Canclea corner that was headed on by Erpen to a waiting Osorno. The former Atlas man never got his chance however as the ball was cleared just inches from his head.

Throughout the second half the Rapids continued to build on the momentum created by the insertion of Osorno and Gomez.

Dallas had a rare second-half opportunity in the 85th minute when a long pass from the back sent Bobby Rhine into space on the right wing. His cross beat Condoul but couldn’t find a Dallas player and went out of bounds just beyond the far post.

The Rapids won a corner on what would be the last play of the game but even Condoul coming up to attack the goal was not enough for the Rapids this time.
