The first opportunity of the night came in the 14th minute when Jean Philippe Peguero and Jeff Cunningham combined on a quick breakaway. The Jamaican-born striker recovered the ball at midfield before feeding it to the onrushing Peguero who took a couple of steps before unleashing a powerful shot that forced goalkeeper Pat Onstad to make a diving save.
Midfielder Eric Denton created the second chance of the night in the 16th minute when his powerful left shot from 20 yards out sailed towards Onstad. The Canadian goalkeeper had trouble controlling the ball which bounced off his chest before he was able to recover it.
The home team struck first in the 38th minute when Ricardo Clark beat Cannon to his near post from six yards out. Clark received a well-played ball from Dwayne De Rosario on the right side of the Rapids penalty area. The Earthquakes midfielder carried the ball five yards before unleashing a blast that beat Cannon to his upper left corner for the momentary lead.
Peguero netted his fourth strike of the season in the 57th minute when he buried a through ball from midfielder Kyle Beckerman. The Haitian international controlled the ball just at the top of the Earthquakes penalty area before unleashing a powerful shot that beat Onstad to his upper left corner.
The Rapids arrived in San Jose late last night as a bizarre twist of events changed the entire travel schedule as well as the travel list for Head Coach Fernando Clavijo’s team. The club which arrived at Denver International Airport for their scheduled flight at 2:30 p.m.(MT) found out that the aircraft that they were checking in for was grounded due to mechanical issues. The entire team was bumped to a later flight departing the Mile High city at 9:00 p.m. (MT) and arriving in the Bay Area at 11:30 p.m. (PT). While waiting for the team bus to return to DIA to take them back to the team’s clubhouse Rapids captain Pablo Mastroeni ate a chicken sandwich for lunch that later had him leveled at home with food poisoning. His replacement on the travel list Leo Cullen arrived in San Jose on Saturday morning.
The tie pushes the Rapids (fourth place) six points ahead of Real Salt Lake (fifth place) in the 2005 playoff race with 10 games left in the regular season including three against each other.
The Rapids next return to Denver where they will host the league-leading New England Revolution at INVESCO Field at Mile High on Wednesday August 17 at 7:30 p.m. (MT) also the Rapids' "Dog Days of August" promotion.
