Rapids' Canadian Comeback Falls Short in 2-1 Loss

Danny Dichio put Toronto in the lead in the ninth minute. Marvell Wynne made a run up the right side of the field and crossed a ball which the Englishman redirected into the net.
Conor Casey had a chance to pull Colorado level in the 13th minute but the Herculez Gomez corner kick he was attempting to put on goal was just out of his reach.
In the 17th minute Bouna Coundoul made two saves to keep the Rapids within a goal. The first was a kick save on Jeff Cunningham and the second a point blank deflection on Andy Welsh.
Dichio was trying for his second goal in the 27th minute but Coundoul blocked his break-away shot and the ball was cleared.
Andrew Boyens doubled Toronto’s lead in the 28th minute when he headed a Ronnie O’Brien corner kick into the net.
Gomez brought the Rapids to within one in the 32nd minute. Casey played a perfect through ball and Herculez easily slipped it past rookie Toronto ‘keeper Srdjan Djekanovic for his fourth goal of the season.
In the 70th minute Gomez played a free kick into the box but it skipped just past the near post of the Toronto goal and out of danger.
O’Brien had a chance to increase Toronto’s lead in the 72nd minute but Coundoul made an excellent reaction save to deny the Irishman.
In the 85th minute Omar Cummings came on for the Rapids and made his professional debut in the loss.
The Rapids will next play in their second ESPN2 Primetime Thursday game this season when they visit the Houston Dynamo this Thursday June 7 in a 7 p.m. (MT) kickoff.
