Rapids Defeat CSU-Pueblo 9-0 in Preseason Exhibition Match in Southern Colorado
PUEBLO Colo. (Colorado Rapids Media Relations)- The Colorado Rapids scored early and often in a 9-0 victory over the CSU-Pueblo ThunderWolves in front of 1517 fans at Dutch Clark Stadium Saturday night.
The match was presented by the Pueblo Rangers Youth Soccer Club and Pueblo School District 60 and was arranged between the Rapids and CSU-Pueblo as a means of brining a top-quality soccer event to the fans of Southern Colorado.
The first scoring chance of the night came when midfielder Colin Clark came streaking out of the midfield and gathered a loose ball at the top of the ThunderWolves' penalty area but his shot skidded just wide of the far post.
Colorado drew first blood in the 6th minute when a Jordan Harvey cross from the far side of the field came into the box. Sasha Gotsmanov rose to meet the ball and headed it toward the far post where Lee Zarcecki beat his defender to stick the ball into the back of the net.
The second Rapids goal was a result of great play on the wing from second year Rapids players Dan Gargan and Hunter Freeman and clinical finishing by Clark. Gargan began the play with a foray down the near side line with speed. Freeman made an overlapping run and was rewarded with the ball going into space. The Texas native than crossed the ball into the box where an onrushing Clark headed the ball down past the CSU-Pueblo 'keeper.
The Rapids opened the second half scoring in the 58th minute. Freeman caught the ThunderWolves defense sleeping off of a free kick that reached Clark who crossed the ball to Denver native Aaron King. King finished the play with a strike for his first goal as a Rapids player as members of his family in the crowd cheered on.
Colorado found the scoresheet again in the 69th minute by way of Daniel Wasson. Wasson finished a Wolde Harris cross after the Jamaican played a give-and-go with Gargan.
Wasson playing in the center of midfield scored his second goal of the night in the 75th minute. The Colorado Springs product ripped a loose ball into the back of the net.
Gotsmanov got into the goalscoring action just two minutes later. After taking a hard shot that was uncontrolled by the ‘keeper Gotsmanov drilled his own rebound into the net for the Rapids' sixth of the night.
Subsitute Cole Sweetser headed in a Dan Gargan corner kick for the 7-0 lead. The Gargan assist was his third of the game as he was causing the T-Wolves problems on the wing all night.
One minute later a Jean Philippe Peguero cross was put into his own goal by ThunderWolves defender Mike Maksimowicz.
The Rapids closed their scoring account in the 86th minute when Harris took a penalty kick and powered it in the left side of the goal while the keeper dove to the right.
The rest of the Rapids squad will be returning to Colorado on Monday from Pachuca Mexico before leaving for a stop in Florida for a couple of games on the way to Bilbao Spain.
