Rapids Defeat Kansas City 2-1 Behind Conor Casey Brace

COMMERCE CITY COLO. (Saturday August 16 2008) – Two goals from Conor Casey was just what the Colorado Rapids needed to break out of a scoring slump and earn three points in a 2-1 victory Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
Casey scored the game-winner in the 47th minute and became the first Rapids player this season to have a multiple goal game. The Denver native has now tallied four of Colorado’s last five goals.

Goalkeeper Preston Burpo making his first start since June 21 made four saves to help secure the win for Colorado who are now in a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference.
The Rapids entered the match not having secured a win in the last five league matches and coming off two consecutive shutout losses. With head coach Fernando Clavijo away from the team attending to a family medical emergency assistant coach Gary Smith helped rally the club behind a new look line-up that featured defenders Mike Petke and newly acquired Cory Gibbs getting their first starts of the year.
After the Rapids missed a couple of chances early Casey opened the scoring in the 11th minute breaking a 214 minute scoreless drought for the team. Terry Cooke crossed the ball from near the corner flag and placed it perfectly over the outstretched arms of Kevin Hartman onto the head of Casey.
Kansas City was able to even the score at 1-1 just moments before halftime as Michael Harrington stuck in a rebound off of a Burpo save in the 44th minute.
Casey put the Rapids on top for good two minutes into the second half when he stripped the ball from Jimmy Conrad eight yards from goal and while slipping to the ground scored to the far post.
The Rapids hit the road for the first time in over a month as they head to our nation’s capital next week to square off against DC United on Saturday August 23 at 5:30 p.m. MT.
