Rapids Defeat University of Alabama in Birmingham 2-0
BIRMINHGAM AL (Colorado Rapids Media Relations)- The Colorado Rapids defeated the University of Alabama in Birmingham 2-0 today at UAB’s soccer complex in Birmingham AL.
The first goal of the night for the Rapids came in the 25th minute when Terry Cooke sent a cross from right to left that found forward Wolde Harris on the other side of the penalty area. Harris beat his defender to the ball and headed it towards goal. The Jamaican’s header was redirected by the 6-3 Eugene Sepuya to keep it out of the reach of UAB’s goalkeeper.
The second goal of the night came in the 55th minute when Harris and Cooke combined again in a similar play as the one for the first goal. Cookie sent an accurate cross to the other side of the penalty area for the onrushing Harris who powerfully headed it past the diving goalkeeper.
Midfielder Josh Elbaum and forward Boubacar Doumbouya who were selected by the Rapids coaching staff from the 2005 open tryouts both played in the 2-0 victory over the local college.
Defender Ricky Lewis left the game with a broken right cheekbone in the 24th minute. The second year Rapids defender was taken to a local hospital where he had surgery. Lewis will travel back to Denver with the team on Sunday and will be evaluated by the Rapids medical staff on Monday morning.
The Rapids will take on the Chicago Fire on Saturday March 12 at 6:30 p.m. (MT) at Hoover High School in the team’s final exhibition match in Birmingham Alabama.
