Rapids Dominate FC Dornach 4-1 in Preseason Action

Fort Lauderdale FL (Colorado Rapids Media Relations)- The Colorado Rapids defeated FC Dornach from Switzerland 4-1 today continuing the team’s 2005 preseason action.

The first goal of the game arrived early in the first half when FC Dornach’s forward Reto Weinmann headed a cross from the right side past goalkeeper Joe Cannon. The goal scored in the 3rd minute gave the Swiss club a momentary lead.

Less than one minute later Jean Phillipe "Pedro" Peguero equalized the game with a shot from 10 yards out. Peguero received a cross from draftee Hunter Freeman at the top of the penalty area and redirected it with an accurate touch with his chest. With this athletic maneuver Pedro was able to create enough space to get his shot past the goalkeeper for the 1-1 tie.

Uruguayan invitee Martin Morales came close to scoring the second goal of the game in the 34th minute when his free kick went just inches wide from the Swiss goal.

Jeff Cunningham netted the second goal for the Rapids in the 50th minute when he one-timed a cross from Pedro just inside Dornach’s penalty area. Peguero received a long pass from midfielder Chris Henderson in a counterattack play 35 yards outside from the Swiss goal. The Haitian international beat his defender to the space and played a cross to the opposite side of the area where he found an onrushing Cunningham who placed his shot past the visiting goalkeeper.

Cunningham netted his second of the day in the 57th minute with a well placed shot form 17 yards out. The Black & Blue's striker received a through ball form Peguero as he was entering the Swiss penalty area. He beat the defender with speed before placing an accurate shot to the upper left corner of Dornach’s goal.

A superb save from the Swiss goalkeeper denied a Wolde Harris bicycle kick in the 65th minute. Luchi Gonzalez played a through ball to Chris Henderson who took it down to the endline before sending his cross into the heart of the penalty area. Harris who was closely marked by a defender utilized the bicycle kick as a resource to get his shot on goal that was denied with a spectacular deflection from the goalkeeper.

Harris found the back of the net in the 83rd minute when he finished a cross from Henderson from the penalty spot. Henderson received a long pass into the space from Terry Cooke on the right side before sending a cross to the other side of the goal area. Harris who had been following the entire play finished with a well-placed volley.

Clavijo’s team will travel back to Denver tomorrow afternoon and will spend eight days in Colorado before departing to Birmingham Alabama where the Black and Blue are scheduled to take on the Chicago Fire in the team’s first MLS exhibition match of 2005.
