Rapids Drop Second Straight Road Match Falling 0-2 to Real Salt Lake

SALT LAKE CITY UTAH (Friday August 29 2008) – The Colorado Rapids were held scoreless for a second straight match on the road falling 0-2 to rival Real Salt Lake Friday night at Rice-Eccles Stadium. The season series between the two clubs is now tied at one apiece with the Rocky Mountain Cup winner to be determined in the season finale on October 25 in Colorado.

Colorado has now lost four of their last five games and has only scored two goals in that stretch. Since a 1-0 victory at New England on April 12 the Rapids are winless in their last seven games away from Dick’s SportingGoodsPark.

Fabian Espindola put the game away in the 59th minute when he one-timed a long ball from Javier Morales over Preston Burpo who had come out of his goal to cut the angle.

In the first half Espindola put RealSaltLake ahead 1-0 in the 22nd minute. Morales found Andy Williams in the Rapids’ penalty box and the Jamaican knocked the ball down for a wide open Espindola who scored to the far post.

Colorado’s best scoring chances came after RSL’s first goal but those chances were not converted as the Rapids had just two shots on goal all night.

In true Rocky Mountain Cup fashion two SaltLake players were talked to by the referee in the first four minutes of the game Kyle Beckerman and Will Johnson. Beckerman has now committed a foul in the first minute in two of the last three games against his former team.

Despite the result and Friday night kickoff a group of about 20 Rapids’ fans made the trip from Colorado and could be heard all night in the stadium.

Colorado will wrap up their three game road trip next week as they take on FC Dallas in the ESPN Primetime Thursday broadcast on September 4 at 6:30 p.m. MT.
