Rapids Face Galaxy in U.S. Open Cup Play-In Match Tonight!

COMMERCE CITY COLO. (April 6 2009) – The Colorado Rapids start their journey into the 2009 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup the same place it did last year Los Angeles.

Three days after the Rapids defeated LA at the Home Depot Center by the score of 3-2 on Saturday night Colorado are set to match up against the Galaxy this Tuesday April 7 at 9:00 pm MT in a play-in match for qualification for America’s oldest sporting tournament.
Last year Colorado eliminated the Galaxy from Open Cup competition with a 1-0 victory on Conor Casey's 82nd minute goal in a first round play-in match at The Home Depot Center on May 27.
If Colorado defeat LA they will then face the winner of Real Salt Lake vs. Seattle Sounders FC for the opportunity to reach the Round of 16.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup the U.S. Soccer Federation’s National Championship is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.
The top six MLS teams from 2008 qualified for the Open Cup while the Rapids and the other seven American teams in MLS are forced to go through qualifying to reach the tournament.
