Rapids Fall 1-0 to FC Dallas on the Road
FRISCO Texas (June 24 2006) – The Colorado Rapids dropped a 1-0 decision to FC Dallas here Saturday night in a Western Conference matchup.
The home team had the first scoring chance in the eighth minute when Ronnie O’Brien crossed a ball to Arturo Alvarez. However Joe Cannon easily handled the flick from the outside of Alvarez’s boot.
The Rapids had their first threat on goal in the 12th minute when Dedi Ben-Dayan crossed a ball into Thiago Martins. The Brazilian popped the ball in the air with his first touch then shot just wide on a volley.
Nicolas Hernandez came close to scoring his third goal of the year in the 21st minute when he fought through a tackle and played a ball down the right to Martins. Martins dribbled down the endline and cut the ball back to the Argentine. Hernandez’s shot was blocked off the line by a Dallas defender.
Cannon made a diving save in the 27th minute to deny O’Brien a goal and then he hopped up to grab a FC Dallas header that was floating over the penalty box.
Kyle Beckerman forced a quality save out of Dario Sala in the 32nd minute. Combination play from a tight space from Ben-Dayan Terry Cooke and Jovan Kirovski opened space in the center of the pitch for Beckerman. The midfielder’s 30-yard shot was saved by a diving Sala.
Kenny Cooper put Dallas on the board first when they came back down the field. Richard Mulrooney and Carlos Ruiz combined to free Cooper. Cannon came out to cut the angle but Cooper’s shot went just past his outstretched hands.
Ben-Dayan nearly scored the equalizer two minutes from halftime. Martins stormed down the left touchline and cut the ball back to the Israeli. Ben-Dayan cut to his left to avoid three Dallas players and unleashed a shot that Sala had to deflect off the woodwork.
In the 74th minute Ben-Dayan had an open shot from the top of the penalty area that caused Sala to pounce on the ball before it could go into the net.
Cannon kept the Rapids within one goal in the 81st minute when he pushed a Roberto Mina shot past his post after Mina had ran past the Rapids offside trap.
Substitute Fabrice Noel had a chance to tie the game in second half stoppage time but his effort went off a Dallas player and out for a corner kick that the Rapids were never able to take as the referee blew the final whistle.
The Rapids now have nine days off before they host the New England Revolution at 7:30 p.m. in the last Fourth of July game at INVESCO Field at Mile High. Colorado owns a 9-1 record in games played on Independence Day.
