Rapids Fall 1-0 To Red Bulls in Withering Heat in Today's Midday Matinee
EAST RUTHERFORD N.J. (Friday July 14 2006) –The Colorado Rapids dropped a 1-0 decision today in a matinee match against the New York Red Bulls in the withering heat of the Meadowlands.
The first scoring chance in the game came to the Red Bulls in the 20th minute. Sharp passing opened up Marvell Wynne who found Edson Buddle at the top of the penalty area. His shot went wide of Joe Cannon’s net.
With scorching temperatures on the new artificial turf players from both teams took every chance to hydrate and cool off by pouring water on their boots.
Amado Guevaro had the Red Bulls' second chance in the 28th minute but his attempt on goal was blocked out front by Aitor Karanka.
New York picked up the only goal of the game in the 35th minute on a Guevara penalty kick. Eric Denton was called for a foul on Chris Henderson in the Colorado penalty area on a tackle very similar to one Karanka suffered earlier but which was not whistled.
Guevara stepped up and knocked the ball home as Rapids 'keeper Joe Cannon guessed the wrong way to put the home side up 1-0.
Karanka attempted to bring his team back level just three minutes later. He took his first shot of the season from the top of the penalty area but it was stopped by backup Red Bulls 'keeper Jon Conway.
Colorado came out of the halftime locker room looking for the equalizer and they almost found it in the 51st minute. The Rapids’ quality passing continued but a dummied ball to Thiago Martins was not converted by the Brazilian.
Just a minute after coming into the match as a sub for Martins Dedi Ben-Dayan took a shot on goal that was snuffed out by Conway.
Jovan Kirovski was the next Rapids player with a chance to tie the game up but his effort also came up short.
The Rapids will next take the pitch this Thursday July 20 when they take on Chivas USA at 6 p.m. Following the league match will be an international exhibition at 8:30 p.m. featuring Club America and San Luis from Mexico.
