Rapids Fall 2-0 to Chivas USA in Final Game of a Three-Match Road Trip

Carson Calif. (Saturday June 16 2007)- The Colorado Rapids were shut out for the first time this season by the league’s stingiest defense in a 2-0 loss at Chivas USA to wrap up a three-game road trip.

In the game’s opening minutes captain Mike Petke broke up multiple Chivas attacks and Bouna Coundoul smothered a long shot from Ante Razov.

On the other end of the pitch Jacob Peterson earned a Colorado free kick on the far side of the penalty area. Terry Cooke took the kick and just missed Conor Casey and Jovan Kirovski as the ball skipped through the box.

Herculez Gomez ran onto the end of a Casey flick in the 32nd minute but his one-timed shot was deflected over the cross bar by Chivas goalie Brad Guzan.

In the next five minutes both Ugo Ihemelu and Gomez had header opportunities off of Cooke crosses but neither found the net.

For the first time this season on a road trip the Rapids went into halftime in a scoreless draw.

Chivas USA took the lead in the 49th minute. A cross from Sacha Kljestan skipped through the Rapids' penalty area and bounced awkwardly off of Cooke and found its way into the net for an own-goal to the Rapids midfielder.

After threatening many times earlier in the half Maykel Galindo used his speed to burn the Rapids. The Cuban took a pass from Jesse Marsch and placed his shot under Coundoul’s right leg and into the net to put The Goats up 2-0.

Guzan made two saves to preserve the victory for Chivas USA in the game’s final five minutes. In the 86th minute he steered a Roberto Brown shot wide of the goal with his left hand and in stoppage time he made a diving save on a Brandon Prideaux header.

Nick LaBrocca made his professional debut in the game for the Rapids starting in the midfield in place of Pablo Mastroeni and Kyle Beckerman who both missed the contest (Mastroeni with the US National Team in the Gold Cup and Beckerman to a suspension due to yellow card accumulation).

The Rapids will next return home to the friendly confines of Dick’s SportingGoodsPark when they take on Western Conference rivals FC Dallas this Saturday June 23 at 7 p.m. For tickets call (303) 825-GOAL.
