Rapids Fall to Red Bulls 1-0

Commerce City CO (Sunday July 8 2007)- The Colorado Rapids held MLS All-Star Juan Pablo Angel scoreless for the second time tonight but John Wolyniec found the back of the Rapids’ net to give the Red Bulls a 0-1 win in front of 12708 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

In the second minute Wolyniec had a one-on-one opportunity with Rapids goalie Bouna Coundoul after getting behind Colorado’s defense. Coundoul stood the striker up and knocked the ball out for a corner kick.

The Rapids had their first scoring opportunity in the fourth minute. Colin Clark put a cross in from the left side that Jacob Peterson headed just wide of the goal.

Clark hit a shot inches wide of the New York net in the 14th minute from the top of the Red Bulls penalty area.

Wolyniec scored the first goal the Rapids had given up in three games in the 20th minute when he buried a shot past Coundoul.

In the 23rd minute Jovan Kirovski got his head on the end of a Kyle Beckerman cross but his shot was a little wide of the goal.

A Terry Cooke cross in the 27th minute came to nothing as Kirovski couldn’t get enough of a foot on it to redirect it into the net.

Ten minutes later Kirovski did well to hit a bouncing ball but his shot went to the left of a diving Ronald Waterreus and out for a goal kick.

New York threatened again in stoppage time of the first half. Wolyniec streaked down the right wing and sent in a cross toward the waiting head of Angel but the Colombian hit man never got a chance as the low-flying pass was picked out of the air by Coundoul.

After making two substitutions at half time the Rapids came out after the break and put heavy pressure on the Red Bulls’ defense.

In the 72nd minute Kirovski nearly equalized for the Rapids after receiving a back heel from Herculez Gomez. The shot beat the goalkeeper but was denied by the crossbar.

Peterson forced Waterreus’ best save of the night in the 83rd minute. He hit a left footed shot that the goalie had to dive to block.

The Rapids again hit the woodwork in second half stoppage time. Peterson headed a Brandon Prideaux cross off the far post of the New York goal.

The Rapids return to action this Tuesday July 10 against the California Victory at Dick’s SportingGoodsPark. The game against the USL first division club marks the next round in the Rapids' quest for the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. The game will kickoff at 7 p.m. MT.Tickets are available by calling the Rapids at (303) 825-GOAL.
