Rapids Handed 3-1 Loss In Toronto

TORONTO (Saturday June 14 2008) – The Colorado Rapids dropped a second consecutive match on the road falling 3-1 to Toronto FC Saturday night at BMO Field. With an unblemished home record Toronto FC increased their point total at home to 17 on the season while the Rapids have lost their last four contests away from Colorado.

The Rapids began the match with a new starting backline as Cesar Zambrano earned his first career MLS start. Stephen Keel returned to the starting 11 after a six-game absence as well as John DiRaimondo coming back from a high ankle sprain suffered in the fourth match of the season.
Both clubs found scoring opportunities hard to come by early with each side battling for possession and control of the middle of the pitch. Jacob Peterson found himself in the middle of the box with the ball at the 4 minute mark but his shot was saved by Brian Edwards.
Toronto’s Jeff Cunningham looking for his 100th career MLS goal had a chance in the 8th minute but to no avail as well. It was not until a long time later when either side would have another good look.
In the 37th minute Toronto’s Danny Dichio broke the scoring drought to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Stephen Keel headed the ball to clear the box but was unable to get enough on it and Dichio sailed a right footed volley from 18 yards out into the right corner of the net.
Toronto added to their lead in the 58th when Rohan Ricketts scored the first of his two goals on the night. Off a ball played over the defense Ricketts carried it through the box and tucked a score in the right corner.
Less than 10 minutes later Ricketts added his second goal when with the ball at his feet as he pulled it back to create enough space for his shot. It marked the second straight match that the Rapids had fallen behind 3-0.
Christian Gomez who was a halftime substitute put Colorado on the board in the 80th minute on a free kick goal from just outside the top of the box.
The match finished out as it began with play being dominated in the middle as Toronto held on for the victory.
Colorado next return home to host the defending MLS champion Houston Dynamo this Saturday June 21 at 7:30 pm MT.
