Rapids Help Feed Denver's Needy in Midst of Food Shortage

ColoradoRapids.com (Monday Oct. 4)- The Colorado Rapids would like to thank all fans who brought canned food or made cash donations at the Rapids game Saturday night.

The Rapids had announced last week that the team would distribute a free game ticket to fans who dropped off canned goods at Saturday night's game vs. the San Jose Earthquakes at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

The Rapids food drive was a special effort by the Rapids in response to the current Food Stamp Crisis facing needy families of Denver and the resulting shortages of food in area food banks. All donated canned food and cash donations collected at the game benefit COMPA Food Ministry Community Partners of the Rapids.

Fans who donated 4 cans of food (or a cash donation of $10) or more to Saturday night’s game received a free Rapids ticket good for the game that night or if they already held a game ticket to the Rapids' Oct. 16 home game.

Al Hodges Community Relations Director of the COMPA Food Ministry had this to say about the current food shortage crisis in Denver: "The food stamp crisis and resulting food shortage in Denver is a serious one especially as it relates to those waiting for food stamps. It shows the need that has existed in food banks around the area as well as exposes the increased numbers of people that have been knocking on food bank doors.

"On the one hand you've got the immediate crisis of those eligible for food stamps and the computer crisis and you're trying to deal with that and on the other hand it's showing that more people are visiting food banks than ever before.

"Families are going to have to make choices this year between buying food and paying the heating bill.

"What COMPA is trying to do is address the immediate need and get food out during this immediate food stamp crisis to families that are eligible and in the long run get food out to all the food pantries to service the long term needs of Denver's needy."
