June 27, 2010
COMMERCE CITY CO (April 18 2008) - The Colorado Rapids today announced that the club will hold a month-long soccer equipment drive for charity during the month of May.
The Rapids in conjunction with the Passback Program and Soccer Dreams Without Borders will be collecting new & slightly used soccer gear during the Rapids' three home games in May at Dick's Sporting Goods Park: Sunday May 4 at 1pm vs. DC United Thursday May 15 at 7:30pm vs. Real Salt Lake and Saturday May 24 at 7:30pm vs. Chivas USA.
Every fan who helps donate to the drive will receive a buy-one get-one free ticket voucher to the Rapids vs. Columbus Crew game on Sunday July 27. The equipment will be collected outside gates B and G each game starting 1 1/2 hours prior to kickoff.
The Passback Program is a joint effort between the U.S. Soccer Foundation Eurosport and Major League Soccer to assist in meeting the soccer needs of all communities. Since its inception soccer gear has been collected and distributed to schools clubs and organizations throughout the country. Equipment collected by Passback has also been distributed to locations as far away as Africa and the ultimate goal is to collect and distribute a million items of soccer gear in the U.S. The Rapids' spokesplayer for the Passback program is Bouna Coundoul. Soccer Dreams Without Borders is a nonprofit 501(c)3 charity located in Evergreen and they will be responsible for collecting the donated soccer gear and distributing the equipment to Colorado Africa South America and Mexico. During 2007 SDWB partnered with Bouna Coundoul the Rapids goalkeeper and sent soccer gear to his former youth club in Senegal where the need for soccer gear is urgent since many of the young players use a ball made of rags and many players do not have shoes. The Rapids encourage fans to help with the club's annual equipment drive; remember to bring new or slightly used items to donate at any of the Rapids' three home games in May!
