June 27, 2010
COMMERCE CITY COLO. (ColoradoRapids.com) - Your Colorado Rapids are preparing to host the newest expansion club in MLS as Kasey Keller and the rest of the Seattle Sounders FC come to town this Saturday for the first time in history.
Kickoff is set for 7:30pm MT this Saturday May 23 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
This will be the first-ever encounter between the two sides in MLS regular season play.
Only one game separates these two clubs in the standings; Seattle are 4-2-3 with 15 points good for 2nd place in the West while the Rapids are currently one spot below them in the rankings with a 3-2-3 record on 12 points.
This will be the only match between these two clubs to take place in Colorado this season. The Rapids will next visit Seattle on May 26 for their next play-in match for entry into the 2009 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. Then on June 28 the Rapids will travel again to the Pacific Northwest for their sole regular season match at Seattle.
On Saturday the Rapids will look to add to their three game unbeaten streak as well as continue their perfect play at home with a flawless 2-0-1 record this season at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
The key match-up to watch this weekend will be Conor Casey who with his fifth goal of the season last weekend against New England now stands tied for second among the league’s top goal scorers faces off against Seattle goalkeeper Kasey Keller and his MLS-best 0.41 goals against average.
Although this is the first regular season match-up between these two teams they also met in the Rapids final preseason contest back on March 12 at Qwest Field with the Rapids winning 1-0.
Colorado has also played Seattle twice while the Sounders were a USL-1 club with both competitions coming in U.S. Open Cup play. On August 7 2007 Seattle handed Colorado a 5-0 defeat in a quarterfinal match-up at Qwest Field. In their first-ever meeting the Rapids were victorious over the Sounders 1-0 in a third round contest at Mile High Stadium in 1999.
This Saturday night's game will be broadcast in Colorado on Altitude. Calling the game for Altitude will be Mike Haynes (play-by-play) Marcelo Balboa (color) and Peter Ruttgaizer (sidelines).
