The MetroStars had the first opportunity of the night in the 10th minute when Sergio Galvan Rey fed Michael Bradley a perfect ball that left him on a one-on-one situation against Rapids goalkeeper Joe Cannon. Bradley’s shot hit the outside of Colorado’s net.
Defender Ritchie Kotschau’s header went wide for the Rapids in the 16th minute. Terry Cooke’s accurate cross into the heart of the MetroStars penalty area off a free kick was mistimed by goalkeeper Zach Wells who collided with teammates and opponents forcing Kotschau to head the ball off target.
Nat Borchers saw his shot stopped by Wells from five yards away in the 19th minute after he closed on a cross by Cooke.
Guevara netted his first goal of the season on the 23rd minute with an accurate penalty kick. Cannon brought forward Mike Magee down inside of the penalty area on a MetroStars breakaway for the referee to point to the penalty spot. Guevara slotted the shot past Cannon for the first goal of the night.
Guevara netted his second of the night in the 26th minute. The Honduran international pushed the ball into the net after a cross from Eddie Gaven squeezed between Galvan Rey and Cannon at the goalmouth leaving the Colorado goalkeeper out of position.
The Rapids came close to scoring a couple of minutes later when a cross from Cooke was deflected by a MetroStars defender and hit the crossbar of Wells’ goal.
The Black and Blue had a goal taken back in the 44th minute when a foul on Wells was called by the referee. Eric Denton sent a cross to the top of the small area where the MetroStars goalkeeper collided with Luchi Gonzalez and defender Carlos Mendes. The loose ball landed at the feet of Mark Chung who sent it into the open net only for the referee to call the strike back whistling a foul on Gonzalez against Wells. The goal would have pulled the Rapids within one goal before going into the locker rooms at half time.
Gonzalez again had a golden opportunity in the 49th minute but his shot was deflected by Wells. The former Peruvian first division forward first-timed a bouncing through ball taking advantage of the wet ground. The ball which was aimed for the back of the net was reached by the goalkeeper’s finger tips before being cleared by the defense.
Substitute forward Jeff Cunningham made an immediate impact as he took the field with a shot in the 65th minute that went over the MetroStars' goal. The former Columbus Crew striker found a bouncing ball inside of the visiting team’s penalty area but mistimed the bounce and saw his attempt land in the stadium stands.
Guevara completed his hat trick in the 73rd minute when he beat Cannon to the near post from 22 yards out. The 2004 Major League Soccer MVP one-timed a pass from Abbe Ibrahim that found the back of the net in the upper left corner of the goal surprising Cannon who was anticipating a cross instead of a shot.
Cunningham scored the lone goal for the Rapids in the 89th minute when he netted his second goal of the season. A good combination between Pablo Mastroeni and Cunningham led to a shot by Alain Nkong that was blocked by a defender. The rebound landed directly in the path of Cunningham who buried it past Wells to his left post.
The last time that the Rapids allowed two goals or more at INVESCO Field at Mile High was July 4th 2003 when they defeated the Kansas City Wizards 3-2.
The Rapids will travel to California next weekend where they will visit the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday May 8th at 6:00 p.m. (MT) at the Home Depot Center in a game that will be broadcast live on Altitude Sports and Entertainment.
