The first goal of the night came in the opening minutes of the match. One minute into the game New England earned a corner kick which Steve Ralston served from the left side. The outswinging service came out to the top of the area to Mexican striker Jose Manuel Abundis whose headed pass went to Jay Heaps on the right post. As Heaps headed a shot on frame that was saved by Colorado goalkeeper Joe Cannon he took a boot to the face from Colorado defender Aitor Karanka. Referee Kevin Stott awarded a penalty kick on the play and Ralston placed the penalty kick into the back of the net.
Nicolas Hernandez created a dangerous opportunity for the Rapids minutes later when he controlled a long ball at the top of the penalty area. Hernandez’s shot was deflected by a diving save from goalkeeper Matt Reis.
Abundis extended the lead for the home team in the 59th minute. His header from six yards out beat Cannon to his near post.
With a man advantage -after a Clint Mathis red card- Clint Dempsey added to the Revs’ lead in the 79th minute chipping a shot over Cannon from 16 yards out for his seventh goal of the year despite replays that appeared to show him yards offside.
Colorado created a late scoring opportunity in the closing minutes before stoppage time. Substitute midfielder Melvin Tarley worked into the area and put a shot on frame that was blocked at the goal line by Michael Parkhurst. The rebound came back to Tarley who again shot and for the second time had ball blocked by Parkhurst. That rebound came back out under Reis who was down on the ground and Stott whistled Reis for a foul on Tarley as he made his third attempt at the goal.
Kyle Beckerman stepped up to take the penalty kick in the 90th minute firing it toward the left post netting his career high seventh goal of the season.
The Rapids will host Bruce Arena and the New York Red Bulls on Saturday October 7th at 7:00pm (MT) in the team’s final regular season game ever played at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
