Rapids Return Home from Rochester with 4-2 Exhibition Win Over Rhinos
Rochester NY (July 31 2005)- The Colorado Rapids defeated the Rochester Raging Rhinos 4-2 in front of 7705 fans on Sunday night at Frontier Field in Rochester NY.
The Rapids earned the first corner of the game in the first minute but Kyle Beckerman’s cross was headed clear of the box.
Rochester took the lead in the fourth minute when a through ball was played to Brazilian Edivaldo DaSilva who pushed the ball past an onrushing Bryon Foss the Rapids' starting 'keeper.
Just three minutes later Jean-Philippe Peguero stepped up and put a penalty kick into the corner of the goal to tie the match. Kyle Beckerman won the penalty when he was pushed down by Lenin Steenkamp as he went up for a header.
Colorado took their first lead of the game in the 10th minute when Wolde Harris dropped a ball back for Beckerman who one- timed the ball into the far corner of the Rochester net.
"Wolde laid a perfect ball for me said Beckerman after the game. "I just had to place the shot away from the goalkeeper to finish the play."
Beckerman had an opportunity for a second goal when he found himself 14 yards from goal but his attempt sailed just over the crossbar.
Rochester ‘keeper Dusty Hudock came up big for the home side in the 36th minute. A Rapids free kick from Marcus Sagastume found the head of Peguero whose header was stopped by a perfectly positioned Hudock.
Beckerman continued his peppering of the goal in the 43 minute when his shot from 25 yards out was bobbled but eventually possessed by Hudock.
Just before halftime a swerving Rochester free kick was well on its way toward the back of Foss’ goal but the SMU product dove to his left to punch the ball away from danger and send the Rapids into the locker room with a 2-1 lead.
Early in the second half Rochester was gifted a penalty kick when Dan Gargan played the ball on a tackle but was called for a phantom trip. DaSilva's penalty shot went off Foss' glove and hit the post before it went into the goal.
Stephen Keel came close to giving the Rapids the lead in the 73rd minute when his header barely cleared the bar.
In the 74th minute Harris broke down the field and as his shot was stopped by Dusty Hudock Sasha Gotsmanov leaned down and headed the rebound into the goal for a 3-2 Rapids lead.
With the Rapids on the offensive again the shots on goal kept coming. Lance Snodgrass had a rocket stopped by a diving Hudock in the 76th minute.
In the waning minutes backup goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul found Fabrice Noel with an outlet pass. Noel used his speed to outrun several Rhino defenders on his way to scoring his first goal as a member of the Colorado Rapids.
