Rapids Sign 2006 MLS MVP Christian Gomez
"Christian is one of the biggest signings in the 13-year history of the Colorado Rapids said Managing Director Jeff Plush. "When combined with Pablo Mastroeni he gives us one of the best center midfield duos in the league."
In order to sign the playmaker Colorado had to complete a trade with DC United for his rights. In that deal the Rapids sent their first round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and future considerations to the nation’s capital.
Gomez was named MLS MVP in 2006 and has been named to the league’s Best XI and the All-Star team the past three years. Since 2005 he ranks second in the league in both goals (35 to Taylor Twellman) and assists (29 to Landon Donovan) and is first in points (99) during that time. Gomez also scored four goals in just nine games at the end of the 2004 season.
For his career Gomez has played in 97 games with 39 goals and 29 assists. In the nearly 100 games he has played the midfielder has only received 20 yellow cards and has never been ejected from a game.
Before coming to the United States to play with DC United Gomez played 13 years in Argentina for Nueva Chicago and Independiente de Avellaneda.
