The Rocky Mountain Cup Will Be Claimed This Saturday Night

COMMERCE CITY CO (ColoradoRapids.com) - There's a famous quotation engraved on the nameplate of the Rocky Mountain Cup the trophy that bestows upon its owner supremacy over the entire Rocky Mountain Region.
True Rapids can recite it by heart. It reads as follows:
"Bring me men to match my mountains
Bring me men to match my plains
Men with empires in their purpose
And new eras in their brains"
-Sam Walter Foss 1894
This coming Saturday inside the lion's den at Rio Tinto Stadium your Colorado Rapids will be looking to answer the call of Sam Foss and return the Rocky Mountain Cup to the Centennial State where the trophy lived for the first two years of its inception.

Your Rapids will battle Real Salt Lake this Saturday night for the third and final time this season in a match fraught with playoff implications. This game also will serve as the deciding game for the annual Rocky Mountain Cup competition.
Kickoff is at 7:00pm this Saturday and it's all on the line for the Rocky Mountain rivals.
Not only will this game determine whether either of the 2 teams make the 2009 playoffs but it will also determine which club's name gets engraved on the trophy and in which state the Cup will live until the end of 2010.
The Rapids will be looking to reclaim the Cup this year as the last 2 years Salt Lake have won the competition. The Rapids had previously been the sole winners of the Cup since its inception with back-to-back-season wins in the Cup's first two years of 2005 and 2006.
In the Rocky Mountain Cup standings your Rapids lead in the race for the annual trophy. Two out of the three matches in the annual tournament have been played so far in '09 and Colorado won the first (2-0 on May 2 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park) with the second ending in a draw (1-1 on June 6 at Rio Tinto Stadium).
That means that Colorado currently hold the edge in the standings by the score of 4-1 (the tournament rules award 3 points for a win 1 point for a draw) and will claim the Cup outright with a win or a draw on Saturday at Salt Lake. RSL would have to win the match by 2 or more goals in order to keep the trophy for another season.
