said PSV coach Guus Hiddink. "The start was satisying but we used up lots of energy because we failed to seal the win in the early phase." PSV has nine points and is three clear of second-placed Arsenal who drew 1-1 with Panathinaikos at Highbury. PSV meets the north London side at home in three weeks. Rosenborg is adrift at the bottom with one point. "It's disappointing that Panathinaikos grabbed a point at Arsenal said Rosenborg coach Ole By Rise. "Now we need a miracle to finish third in the group. It'll be tough in my final weeks at Rosenborg but I won't resign before the end of campaign." Rosenberg said last month that it would sack Rise after a disappointing run of results despite the fact that he went on to steer his team to a record 13th consecutive Norwegian title. PSV who had injury doubts Mark van Bommel (thigh) and Alex (bruised toe) in its starting lineup created the first chance after seven minutes when Van Bommel set up Beasley but Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink just failed to connect with the cross. Three minutes later Philip Cocu found Beasley with a pass over the defense and the American youngster neatly clontrolled the ball and took it round goalkeeper Espen Johnsen to score. The early goal seemed to lull Guus Hiddink's PSV side into a false sense of security and Rosenborg fought back. Within three minutes the Norwegians created two good chances to level the match but Stale Stensaas failed to put the ball into an empty net while PSV goalkeeper Edwin Zoetebier saved a close range attempt by Frode Johnsen. Inspired by skipper Van Bommel PSV regained control of the match and after 26 minutes Vennegoor of Hesselink was set up to double its lead but a brilliant reflex save by Johnsen kept Rosenborg in the match. Both sides started slowly in the second half but in the 57th minute Jefferson Farfan forced Johnsen to save at full stretch after he shot from outside the penalty area. Five minutes later Beasley found his way past three Rosenborg defenders but failed to find Vennegoor of Hesselink or the attacking midfielder Cocu. With 12 minutes left Rosenborg launched a well organized counterattack but Mikael Dorsin who was completely unmarked fired high over the bar. In the nervous final minutes PSV had several chances to seal the points but its strikers failed to pull the trigger on several occasions. With the club's third win in a row PSV consolidated its lead in Group E and took a huge step towards its first qualification for the knockout phase of the Champions League.
