Rapids earn a point at home

The New York Red Bulls won a hard-earned point away to the Colorado Rapids despite the home side’s dominating large periods of the game.

Omar Cummings netted his fourth goal of the season in the 15th minute for the Rapids, sliding in Conor Casey’s inch-perfect cross from close range to give the Rapids the lead. But Juan Pablo Angel tied things up for the Red Bulls with a blistering shot from inside the penalty area in the 34th minute after being left unmarked on a corner kick.

The match was played in an on-again-off-again driving rainstorm, and the players were forced to contend with swirling wind for large parts of the game.

The Rapids handled it better than the visitors, creating many more chances than the visitors. Their efforts paid off on a quick counterattack in the 15th minute. Casey, who has been in great form since inexplicably being left off the US World Cup team, raced down the right side of the field and curled a brilliant pass in behind the Bulls’ backline. Cumming, who had made the run to the far post, was there to side-foot the ball in for his 4th goal of the season.

But less than 20 minutes later, the Red Bulls, who were winners last week in Kansas City, were level. Veteran striker Angel, who notched two goals last week, found himself with a second of space after Drew Moor missed a clearing header from a corner kick. The ball landed at the Colombian’s feet and he blasted his volley into the top of the net.

The Rapids came out firing in the second half as they pushed for the winner. Mehdi Ballouchy, who had a goal disallowed in the opening 45 minutes, blasted a firecracker against the bar from well outside the penalty area in the 68th minute. New York goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul was well beaten, but the Moroccan was unable to find the net.

In the 76th minute, Colin Clark cut inside from the left and fired a shot from the edge of the penalty box that veered just past the far post. Casey nearly flicked a header in two minutes later and Wells Thompson came very close to scoring his first Rapids’ league goal when he almost headed in from a Kosuke Kimura cross in the 85th minute.

But as much as the Rapids pressed, they couldn’t convert any of their chances. While the tie extends the Rapids’ unbeaten MLS league run to six games, it is the Red Bulls who will be happy with their point on a very difficult night for good soccer to be played in Colorado.
