The Rapids, MLS and Commerce City celebrate Earth Day by going green

Commerce City, Colo.(April 20, 2011) – The Colorado Rapids, MLS, and Commerce City celebrate Earth Day on April 22 when the Rapids take on the Seattle Sounders FC at 7:30 pm MT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. In a collaborative effort to set and meet their Greener Goals, the organizations invite Rapids fans and community members to join in the Earth Day celebration before the match.

Celebration activities include an interactive tour of the HealthONE AirLife helicopter, which was recently awarded the International Air Medical Program of the Year. Fans are invited to tour the equipment inside the helicopter and learn more about what AirLife EMS do for the community. Throughout the game, on-site electronic and aluminum recycling provided by Commerce City Citizens for Recycling, various vendors around the stadium concourse with “green” educational and interactive stations and give-aways from MLS W.O.R.K.S. Greener Goals program.

In addition to the activities for fans, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, a founding member of the Rocky Mountain Greener Venues Partnership, and MLS W.O.R.K.S. will purchase Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) from Bonneville Environmental Foundation to offset the electricity used during the April 22 match. The number of RECs purchased across the league represents a carbon dioxide-equivalent reduction of more than 2,126,600 pounds.

Beyond Earth Day, the Colorado Rapids, Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and Commerce City’s Greener Goals include energy-efficient building improvements, recycling initiatives, strategic planning and education of “green” initiatives.
