Reserves defeat University of Denver 5-1

Four players score in scrimmage versus local Universiry at DSG Park

Commerce City, Colo. (April 19, 2011) - A reserve Colorado Rapids squad defeated the University of Denver Men's Soccer team 5-1 in a scrimmage played on the Rapids' training field at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Tuesday afternoon. Colorado's goals were scored by Joseph Nane, Davy Armstrong, academy forward James Rogers and two from Ross LaBauex, who started at forward.

After a scoreless first 30 minutes, the teams combined for four goals in the final 15 minutes of the half. Seventeen-year-old JameS Rogers, a member of the Rapids U-18 Development Academy team, created the first goal when he was taken down in the box. Midfielder Joseph Nane stepped up to convert the Ensuing kick from the spot to break open the scoring.

The collegiate side tied the match a minute later when a player curled a low shot around the diving Ian Joyce that tucked closely to the near post.

In the 34th, Rapids center back Mike Holody pushed forward to win a ball 40 yards from the goal. He worked a give-and-go with Josh Janniere on the right side and took the ball to the endline before sending a low pass across the goalmouth that evaded the DU 'keeper. Ross LaBauex held off his mark and calmly tapped Holody's pass in to give the Rapids the lead again.

Holody and LaBauex combined again minutes later for the third goal. Holody sent a 50-yard lob from his own end that bounced once behind the DU defense before LaBauex headed it from just inside the box over the on-rushing 'keeper to make it 3-1 Rapids.

Just before halftime, two other defenders got in on the scoring. Left back Danny Earls pushed forward and sent a ball across the goal box to right back Eddie Ababio. Ababio stepped over once before sending the ball to the far post where 19-year old Davy Armstrong one-timed his shot at the near post.

Academy midfielder Ricardo Perez, 15, replaced Ababio shortly into the second half when Ababio pulled up holding his right hamstring. Perez jumped in at right midfield with Armstrong, who had switched from the left side, dropping to right back. Minutes later the teenagers combined with Rogers for the final goal of the day. Armstrong and Perez worked their own give-and-go to break down the defense, allowing Armstrong to enter the corner of the box before laying off a ball for Rogers, who finished by sending his shot to the far right side of the goal.
