Rapids Sign Defender Miguel Comminges
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Friday, September 9, 2011) – The Colorado Rapids announced on Friday that the team has signed versatile defender Miguel Comminges, a Guadeloupe international with experience playing professionally in France and England, as an International Player. Comminges is expected to join the team early next week and will be eligible for Tuesday night’s match against Santos in the CONCACAF Champions League. Per League and Team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Miguel is a talented, versatile defender, and will give our squad even better depth by providing another option at left or right back," said Head Coach Gary Smith. “He has trained with the club a good deal in the last month, and we’re excited to officially welcome him into the team."
Comminges, 29, was most recently playing with Southend United in England’s League Two, having also played for Cardiff City in the Football League Championship from 2008-2011, and Swindon Town from 2007-2008. His professional career began in the French Ligue 2, first with Amiens SC from 2002-2003 and then with Stade de Reims from 2003-2007. Originally from Guadeloupe, a Caribbean island that is an overseas region of France, the defender has represented his home country in international play since 2007, including at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in 2011, 2009 and 2007, when the team finished third.
The Rapids face the LA Galaxy tonight at 9:00 p.m. MT in a match that will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel, and will return home for the CONCACAF Champions League match against Mexican powerhouse Santos Laguna on Tuesday, September 13 at 8:00 p.m. MT at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
