O’Neill named Colorado Soccer Player of the Year
SHANE O’NEILL NAMED COLORADO’S GATORADE BOYS SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Colorado Rapids U-18 Development Academy player Shane O’Neill, from Fairview High School in Boulder, has been named Colorado’s Gatorade Boys Soccer Player of the Year for the 2011 season. O’Neill, who is originally from Cork, Ireland, is the Knights’ first winner of the award and was recognized for scoring 19 goals and adding six assists in his senior season. Also an All-Colorado selection by the Denver Post, O’Neill was the West team MVP of December’s national High School All-American Game in Birmingham, Ala., as well as the 2011 Front Range League Player of the Year, and had a career total of 48 goals and 27 assists.
Last month O'Neill signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Virginia, winner of the 2010 NCAA College Cup. He has been training regularly with the Rapids first team throughout preseason.
REGISTRATION OPEN FOR SPRING 2012 CENTER OF EXCELLENCE: Registration is now open for the Spring 2012 Center of Excellence training series, a six-session camp to expose young players ages 8-12 to quality coaching, to be held in March and April this year. Participants will be able to choose from two locations, either Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, which begins March 12, or East Boulder Recreational Center starting on March 11. The camp is designed to make players more aware of the technical requirements of an elite soccer player and to nurture the advancing serious player. COLORADO YOUTH SOCCER RELEASES SPRING SCHEDULE FOR ACADEMY TEAMS: Colorado Youth Soccer (CYS) has released the 2012 spring soccer schedule for Colorado Rapids Academy’s U-11 through U-15 boys and girls teams. All nine Academy teams will begin their seasons the weekend of March 10 with matches at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park and various other fields throughout the area.
