Reserves defeat Fire 2-1 for first win of the season
Commerce City, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids reserves earned their first win of the season by defeating the Chicago Fire 2-1 at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on Monday morning. All three goals were scored off rebounds after saves by the goalkeepers, with Andre Akpan netting both for Colorado and Federico Puppo scoring for Chicago.
Colorado had the first chance after 13 minutes. Kohei Yamada got to the endline and from a tight angle got a shot off that was saved at the near post by Sean Johnson. Kamani Hill hit the rebound but Chicago's Hunter Jumper dove in and blocked the ball off his chest.
Chicago pressed late and nearly scored in the 31 but Or Barrouch's shot hit the left post. A few minutes later, Hunter Freeman served up a cross from the right that Hill headed towards goal. Johnson made the save but Akpan was there to tap the ball in the first goal.
The Fire evened the match in the 60th. This time it was Barrouch that got a shot off from the right side. Goalkeeper Stew Ceus made the save but the ball bounced forward and Puppo was there to lift the ball over Ceus for the equalizer.
The Rapids retook the lead with five minutes to go. Johnson saved Quincy Amarikwa hard shot but the ball bounced to the top of the box and Akpan was their to slot it home.
