Rapids acquire allocation money, international slot from Portland for Kimura
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Thursday, July 5, 2012) – The Colorado Rapids announced on Thursday that the club has acquired allocation money and an international roster spot in a trade with the Portland Timbers, sending defender Kosuke Kimura to Portland in exchange.
“This is a move that gives us flexibility as we work with our roster and prepare for the rest of the season and beyond,” said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. “This was an incredibly difficult decision for us, considering the wonderful service Kosuke has given us both on and off the field since he arrived here in 2007. He is a class act and we wish him success in Portland.”
The Rapids acquired allocation money, which can be used to sign players or to buy down players’ salary cap numbers, as well as an international roster spot for the remainder of 2012. The Rapids now have seven international spots, and six players on the roster currently under that designation: Edu, Jaime Castrillón, Harrison Henao, Martín Rivero, Jamie Smith, and Luis Zapata.
Kosuke Kimura, a native of Kobe, Japan, was the drafted by the Rapids in 2007 out of Western Illinois University with the 35th overall selection in the MLS Supplemental Draft. He established himself as a regular in the 2008 season, and during the Rapids’ MLS Cup run in 2010, Kimura scored a key goal in the Conference Championship to send the club to the final. In 2011, he started all 34 regular season games, and in six seasons with Colorado, Kimura played 117 regular season games (starting 109), scoring four goals and adding eight assists. Off the field, Kimura was active in the community; he was named the club’s Humanitarian of the Year in 2010 and helped raise money for tsunami relief throughout 2011.
The Rapids visit Seattle Sounders FC this Saturday in a nationally televised match, broadcast live on NBC Sports at 9:00 p.m. MT. Colorado then returns home on Saturday, July 14 to host FC Dallas at 7:00 p.m. at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.
