COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Wednesday, July 25, 2012) – The Colorado Rapids announced on Wednesday that the club has re-signed goalkeeper Matt Pickens, the club’s all-time leader in shutouts, to a multi-year contract. The four-year Rapids veteran, who has played 143 games in his MLS career, is currently leading MLS in saves. Per league and team policy, terms of the contract were not disclosed.

“Matt has been a steady, confident presence behind our defense for several years, and his play keeps improving every season,” said Rapids Technical Director Paul Bravo. “He provides leadership and stability in the back and we’re happy to have signed him to a new deal.”

“I’m thrilled to sign a new contract with the Rapids, and commit to staying here in Denver,” said Pickens. “I feel good about the direction the Rapids are going in with Oscar leading the way, and we're all working toward the common goal of bringing this club another championship.”

Pickens becomes the fifth Rapids player to sign a multi-year contract extension since the end of last season, joining Brian Mullan, Jeff Larentowicz, Omar Cummings, and Drew Moor. The goalkeeper joined the Rapids in 2009 and has played 103 games (all starts) for Colorado in his four seasons with the club, more than any other keeper in team history. His 27 shutouts are a club record, and with 39 wins, Pickens sits tied with Marcus Hahnemann for the all-time Rapids lead in that category. He has played exceptionally well for the Rapids in 2012, and is currently the MLS leader in saves, with 78.

An alum of Missouri State University, Pickens was selected 19th overall in the 2004 MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire, where he played 40 matches over four seasons before joining Queens Park Rangers in England’s Football League Championship. A native of Washington, Missouri, Pickens has been called into several United States National Team camps but has not yet played a match for the U.S.

The Rapids host Seattle Sounders FC this Saturday night at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. For more information on the game, or to purchase tickets, call 303-825-GOAL or CLICK HERE.
