Rapids U18s draw with Vancouver keeps team from advancing to final

Colorado finish group play with 0-2-1 record, not enought to win group

The Colorado Rapids U-18s run at the U.S. Soccer Development Academy national championship ended today with a 1-1 draw against the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final match of Group 1 play at the Houston Amateur Sports Park.. The Rapids draw leaves them with two points after three games and in third place.

Vancouver, with two wins and a draw, win the group and will conclude its first season in the Academy by facing 2011 runner-up FC Dallas in the final Sunday, July 23, at 8 p.m. CT at BBVA Compass Stadium.

The Rapids will face Baltimore Bays Chelsea FC in the fifth-place match on July 22 at at the Houston Amateur Sports Park.

Colorado's Idrissa Camara broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute, finishing a well-constructed passing sequence by firing a low drive from the top of the 18-yard box that deflected off his marker and skidded under Irving.

Needing only a draw to advance, Vancouver equalized in the 78th minute off an individual effort by Spencer DeBoice, who took control on the left side and slashed inside toward goal, tucking a shot just inside the in near post.

Already missing standout Dillon Serna, who was with the U.S. U-20 National Team, the Rapids also played without recently signed homegrown players Shane O'Neill, who was called up for the first team for the match against Real Salt Lake.
