Did You Know: Three of Major League Soccer's first 16 Most Valuable Players were Hondurans.

With today's announcement that the Rapids have acquired English Premier League midfielder Hendry Thomas, who starred for Honduras in the 2010 World Cup and 2008 Olympics, we take a look at other Honduran's that have played in Major League Soccer.

For starters, as of August 20, 2012, only 17 players born in Honduras have played in MLS regular season matches since 1996, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Two of those players were midfielder Amado Gueverra (2003-2009) and forward Alex Pineda Chacon (2001-2003), who each won the MLS Golden Boot Award, MLS Best XI honors, and were named MLS Most Valuable Players in their respective All-Star seasons. Guevarra racked up his honors with the MetroStars (now NY Red Bulls) in 2004, while Pineda Chacon won his awards in 2001 with the since-contracted Miami Fusion. The League's MVP in 2007 was Luciano Emilio, a naturalized Honduran who was born in Brazil, who also was an All-Star, Best XI, and Golden Boot winner.

Thomas becomes the 8th Honduran in MLS this season, and fourth signed over the past month. Four young Hondurans recently helped their Olympic team advance to the quarterfinals in London, and three others played for Honduras' senior team last week:

  • Sporting KC's Roger Espinoza (2008-2012), New England's Jerry Bengtson (signed last month), DC United's Andy Najar (2010-2012), and Seattle's Mario Martinez (signed two weeks ago), all played in the young Catracho's upset over win over Spain and the dramatic 2-3 loss to Brazil a few weeks ago in London.
  • Victor Bernardez (2012) and All-Star Marvin Chavez (2012; DAL 2009-2011) have helped the San Jose Earthquakes to the best record in Major League Soccer.
  • Boniek Garcia, who signed with the Houston Dynamo in July, joined Bernardez, Chaves, Bengtson, Espinoza, and Martinez for Honduras' friendly in Miami on Wednesday against Boca Juniors in preparation for their upcoming World Cup Qualifier.

Other Hondurans that have played in Major League Soccer, as provided by the Elias Sports Bureau:

Ramon Nunez (2004-2007; Dallas, Chivas USA), Milton Reyes (2002-2004; DC United, Dallas), Mauricio Castro (2008-2010; New England), Arnold Cruz (1997; DC United, San Jose), Carlos Pavon (2007; LA Galaxy), Samuel Caballero (2005, Chicago), Saul Martinez (1999; Miami), Carlo Costly (2011; Houston).
