Playoff Outlook: One team in, one eliminated heading into weekend
Heading into last weekend, all 10 MLS Cup Playoff berths were still up for grabs. That changed over the course of the 5 days.
The San Jose Earthquakes didn't play last week but clinched the first playoff berth in the Western Conference by virtue of Chivas USA's loss to Seattle. With the top five teams in each conference qualifying for the postseason, four teams in the West can no longer catch the 'Quakes, who are also frontrunners for the MLS Supporters Shield a year after failing to make the playoffs.
The Eastern Conference saw it's first casualty on Wednesday when the Chicago Fire defeated Toronto FC, eliminating the Canadian club from the playoff race.
The Seattle Sounders could join San Jose in the postseason on Saturday but will need to defeat the Portland Timbers (Sat, 1:30 MT live on NBC) AND have SJ beat Chivas USA (Sat., 8:30 MT, MLSsoccer.com). If both results happen, then there will only be three playoff berths available in the West. Colorado trail the fifth place Vancouver Whitecaps by eight points heading into Friday night's match at the LA Galaxy (9 MT, Altituve TV - Preview).
Back in the East, while no team can clinch a spot yet, New England could join TFC on the out if they lose to DC United (Sat., 5:30 MT, MLSsoccer.com). If the Revolution and DC draw, the Revs would still be knocked out IF the Columbus Crew defeat the New York Red Bulls (Sat., 5 MT, MLSsoccer.com).
