Five players score in scrimmage versus Air Force Academy

Akpan nets two, Hill, Powers, O'Neill, and Pirchio also score in 6-2 win

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Monday, March 11, 2013) – The Colorado Rapids Reserves today defeated the U.S. Air Force Academy 6-2 in a scrimmage at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Andre Akpan scored the first and last goal for the Rapids, while Dillon Powers, Marcos Pirchio, Kamani Hill, and Shane O’Neill each added one goal. Forward Edson Buddle also saw his first competitive action with the Rapids after recovering from a knee injury, playing 62 minutes.

U.S. Air Force Academy opened scoring in the 18th minute to take a 1-0 lead. The held onto it for 10 minutes before Akpan buried a loose ball from a tackle in the box made by Tony Cascio. Hill notched his in the 40th, and Powers made his contribution a minute later to give the Rapids a 3-1 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Pirchio fired a low driven shot to the left corner and O’Neill slammed the ball into the roof of the goal on a corner kick play, increasing the Rapids lead to four goals. Akpan added his second of the day in the 83rd minute, just minutes before Air Force rallied to score their second and end the game with a 6-2 Rapids victory.
