Matchup Notes: Rapids-RSL, March 16

Colorado snapped a long winless streak vs RSL last summer, meet for first of three on Saturday

The Colorado Rapids face Real Salt Lake for the first of three meetings on Saturday, March 16 in Utah at Rio Tinto Stadium. RSL has won the Subaru Rocky Mountain Cup from the Rapids in 2007 and has held on to it since. The team that wins the season series keep the RMC, and if a series is tied, the team that has the Cup gets to keep it.

This year's winner will be decided in Colorado, as the teams will play at Dick's Sporting Goods Park on April 6 and August 3.

Notes:

  • Twelve players have played for both teams in this rivalry now that Atiba Harris has played for Colorado. Nathan Sturgis would be next when he debuts for the Rapids.
  • Of the 12, four players first played for RSL before wearing Rapids colors: Mehdi Ballouchy, Melvin Tarley, Clint Mathis, and Harris.
  • Eight players first played with Colorado before heading to the other side of the Rockies: Seth Trembly, Jordan Cila, Ritchie Kotschau, Jeff Cunningham, Scott Garlick, Nat Borchers, Kyle Beckerman, and Chris Wingert.
  • Beckerman, Borchers, and Wingert are still with RSL, though the latter two have yet to play in 2012 (injured).
  • When the Rapids defeated RSL on August 4, 2012, they broke an eight-game winless streak against Salt Lake.
  • Colorado has yet to win at Rio Tinto Stadium, posting an 0-4-2 record since the stadium opened in 2009.
  • The Rapids' last win in Utah was on April 30, 2007, winning 2-0 at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
  • In fact, the home team hasn't lost in the series since 2007 (see below).
  • In the ninth year of the rivalry, this is the seventh time the first match of the season is played in Utah - and fourth year in a row.
  • The all-time series is tied at 9-9-7. Colorado has scored 23 goals while RSL scored 26 - 13 of which have come in the final 15 minutes of the match.
  • Colorado also eliminated RSL both times they met in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup (2006, 2007). The teams have never squared off in the MLS Cup Playoffs.
  • Rapids forward Edson Buddle was teammates with Wingert in Columbus in 2004 and 2005. Wingert has also been teammates with Pablo Mastroeni, Nick LaBrocca in Colorado and Sturgis and Harris at RSL.
  • Buddle has scored 10 career goals versus RSL (14 GS, 12 GP): 2 with the Crew, 3 with RBNY, and 5 with the LA Galaxy. The only team Buddle has more goals against is FC Dallas (11 goals).
  • The only current Rapids player to score a goal against RSL - as a member of Colorado - is LaBrocca, who scored his lone RMC goal in 2009.
  • Drew Moor has played RSL 22 times, three more than any other team (19 vs LA). His five caution against RSL are also more than vs any other team, and he received his only ejection in his MLS career against the Utah club while with Dallas in 2009.
  • Like Colorado, RSL made several changes in the offseason, trading long-time fixtures in defender Jamison Olave and forward Fabian Espindola to RBNY and midfielder Will Johnson to Portland. RSL also brought back 2010 World Cup forward Robbie Findley.
