Rapids goalkeeper Matt Pickens suffered a broken left arm in the fourth minute against Real Salt Lake on Saturday afternoon after punching a ball away from a corner kick. Clint Irwin made his MLS debut when he replaced Pickens minutes later. Pickens was taken to a local hospital for further evaluation.

The team's 2012 MVP was injured when he collided with RSL defender Kwame Watson-Siriboe as he punched a cross away early on. Watson-Siriboe was shown a yellow card on the play.

Despite it being Irwin's MLS debut, the goalkeeper has experience against MLS opposition. In May 2012 Irwin was in goal for the Charlotte Eagles as they eliminated FC Dallas from the U.S. Open Cup after a 2-0 win, in which Dallas outshot Charlotte 28-7.

Irwin is the third goalkeeper to play for the Rapids in just the third match of the season. Stew Ceus started the opener against Dallas and Pickens played last week's match against Philadelphia.
