Smith scores Colorado's first goal of the season

Veteran midfielder says team needs to take more the chances it create following home loss

Colorado Rapids midfielder Jamie Smith scored the first goal of the season, tying the match against Philadelphia before the Union re-took the lead.

On the atmosphere at the stadium for the home opener:

"Obviously the atmosphere was really good. It was good to be back out at home and obviously the result didn’t go our way but I thought we created enough chances to take three points. And it’s just a matter of taking the chances that we’re creating."

On the result despite maintaining possession:

"Obviously we need to take the chances that we create, but looking back at the last two games we’ve been controlling the possession. I’d much rather be the team that controls possession than the team that doesn’t. if we just keep doing what we’re the chances will keep coming and we’ll eventually start scoring them."

On his goal:

"I think we just got the break away. Deshorn [Brown] did real well. He’s a young kid but he’s quick and he’s strong. He set me up and I knew if I took the shot early it would surprise the keeper a little bit. And that’s what happened, I took the shot early and pretty sure the keeper was expecting me to take a touch and shoot, but I took it first time."

On how the new and young players have been doing with the team:

"They’re all young kids and some of us have got a long time ahead of them playing. It can sometimes be tough coming into a new place with new teammates but we all fit in very well. They’re clearly all very talented and skillful and I’m sure they’ll do well for the first team."
