Marvell Wynne and Jamie Smith working their way back to full fitness following injuries
One by one the Colorado Rapids players are making their way back from injuries.
Wynne, who injured his right quadricepts in the second half of the home loss to the Seattle Sounders on April 20, was glad to be out of the training room and back on the training field.
"It feels great to be back outside," Wynne told ColoradoRapids.com. "I love this green stuff. What do they call it, grass? It's wonderful to be back on it and kick the soccer ball a couple of times."
Smith was injured towards the end of his first start of the season on April 28 in the road draw at Houston.
"Just as I was hitting the shot, Brad Davis made a really fair, strong challenge and my leg was somewhat exposed and I felt my groin tighten," Smith said. "But I feel strong now. (I) had a good session today and hopefully I'm going to be back out there shortly."
Smith injured on play in Houston
Since their injuries both players worked on various exercises in the training room before receiving clearance to progress to ball work and fitness.
"Obviously I had to let the injury settle down, but I did a lot of rehab indoors and a lot of strengthening work," Smith added. "I've been doing that for the past few weeks now and it's building towards getting back on the field and doing soccer-related stuff."
On Tuesday they each took part in early training drills with the full team before moving to the side to work with fitness coach Paul Caffrey. It was much of the same on Wednesday, until the latter stages when Wynne was cleared to join an 8v8 game without restrictions.
"I did a lot of good fitness drills so I know I can kick the ball comfortably and pick up my pace a little bit," Wynne said. "I'm pretty optimistic about the upcoming week and hopefully I'll get back there on the pitch."
Coach Oscar Pareja said afterwards that it's possible both players could travel with the team to San Jose. The Rapids play the Earthquakes Saturday at 8:30 pm MT (Altitude TV) and the Reserves play each other on Sunday morning.
