Matchday Welcome: Rapids host San Jose Earthquakes

President Tim Hinchey welcomes fans to Dick's Sporting Goods Park for tonight's match at 7 p.m.

Rapids Fans:

Thank you for turning out to support our Colorado Rapids on a warm Saturday here at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. It’s been two weeks since our last league match, a 2-2 draw with FC Dallas here in Commerce City, and we’re eagerly awaiting our return to action.

Before we get started, however, everyone in the Rapids organization would like to offer our deepest condolences to those affected by the wildfires throughout Colorado. After seeing the devastation these disasters can cause last summer, we can only hope that these fires are under control soon. We encourage you to assist out in any way you can – visiting www.HelpColoradoNow.org is a great place to start if you’re looking for a way to help.

As we approach the halfway point of the season, we’re excited about the recent run of results, but we know that there’s a lot of work left to be done. The 5-1-4 record in the last 10 games is evidence of the hard work from our players and coaches, and today is another opportunity to pick up vital points. Our opponents tonight have struggled on the road this season, but have much of the same squad as last year, when they won the Supporters’ Shield. They’ll also be playing for a new head coach, in Mark Watson, and looking to impress. It’s our job to keep their dangerous attack in check, and score a few goals ourselves!

Tonight we’re without defender Shane O’Neill, who is currently with the United States Under-20 National Team as they prepare for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Turkey. Just yesterday he scored the game-winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Portugal in a tune-up for the tournament, and in less than a week, on June 21, the U.S. open play against Spain – many of us will tune in at 11:45 am MTon ESPN2 for that game.

Finally, remember that you can still participate in our fundraiser for the USO by purchasing a magnet for $5 at the USO booth atop Section 127 – and in return, you get a free Coca-Cola drink. Again, thank you for coming out to tonight’s match, and remember to watch for players around the field after the final whistle to get an autograph. And if any of us can help make your experience at the game better, please don’t hesitate to stop us, or to contact Rapids Customer Service above Section 129. Come on you Rapids!
